This is a well-made and beautiful RARE Vintage Mid Century Modern Japanese Brutalist Pottery Sculpture, by noted Japanese - American, Claremont, California modernist Takao Tomono (1935 -). This work depicts an abstract and modern Brutalist design, with both Japanese and American MCM influences.
The glaze of this vessel is robust and roughly hewn, displaying a traditional Wabi Sabi effect. Each side of this work depicts abstracted petroglyph motifs, reminiscent of ancient Native American rock carvings and cave paintings. This work is unsigned but was acquired directly from the estate of the artist. Likely dating to the 1960's - 1970's. Approximately 16 3/4 inches tall x 10 1/2 inches wide x 4 5/8 inches deep.
Good condition, with one light kiln crack that is original to the piece and was created from heat of Tomono's backyard kiln please see photos. The sale of this work will include an original 1960's promotional flyer by the artist as an assertion and representative certificate of authenticity.
