Tom's intimate knowledge and vast experience with nature, as well as his enduring commitment to nature conservation, date back to his childhood years of growing up in the African bush. His artistic inspiration is rooted in his fascination and love of the diverse wonders of the natural world. Prior to operating his own wilderness safari business in sub-Saharan Africa, he worked as a senior Game Ranger in the Kruger National Park for twenty one years.

During this time he lived in some of the most remote ranger-stations and had many encounters with Africa's Big Five, including surviving a near fatal crocodile attack early in his career. Tom describes his 30 years of living in the African wilderness as a wonderful experience, with abundant opportunities to observe and work with African animals in their natural surroundings. As a result of his love of nature, and his ability to understand the subtle nuances of animal behavior, he developed a unique style of sculpting. His sculptures have a tangible vitality, which evokes a sense of the animal's inner spirit.

This is largely due to his ability to portray no only the bold characteristic expressions of the wild animals he sculpts, but also their more delicate features.
